Don't fall!: Ice skating with SDAIHYC
Last Thursday, December 9, Youth Center members, family and staff headed to Horton Plaza's outdoor ice rink for Fantasy on Ice, sponsored by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Participants ranged from seasoned figure skaters to youth who have never been on a pair of skates! We skated for nearly 2 hours, and would have gone longer if we didn't close at 8PM...Pictures can be found in our 2010 December Festivities album here.

Celebrating the season with December Nights 2010
The holiday season was kicked off by active and new Youth Center members and families yesterday with a dinner and field trip to December Nights at Balboa Park. The night began with a salad and pizza dinner amongst the newly-decorated tree, along with cupcakes, brownies and cookies baked exclusively by Youth Center members. We then walked over to Balboa Park and enjoyed the newly-lit trees, free museums, and rides. Click here to see pictures from December Nights and other holiday festivities in the 2010 December Festivities album.

2010 World AIDS Day
Nearly 30 SDAIHYC youth members, parents and staff participated in the 2010 World AIDS Day events in Hillcrest. The night started with a candlelight vigil from the LGBT Center to Village Hillcrest. This was followed by the 19th annual Tree of Life Ceremony, co-hosted by Mama's Kitchen. Participants heard remarks from community members and elected officials, including Councilman Todd Gloria. Lighting of the Tree of Life and participants' candles followed the speeches. The San Diego Gay Men's Chorus also performed a medley of holiday standards. Visit our Photobucket album here to view pictures from the event in the 2010 December Festivities album.

Au revoir, mis niños y niñas!
Dear Youth, Family, and Community Members,
It has been a fulfilling year and a half with the San Diego American Indian Health Youth Center. Since I have become a licensed psychologist, there is a stronger need for me to focus my workday in the Behavioral Health Department with adults. This means I will no longer serve as the Youth Center Project Coordinator. This position has been awarded to a much-deserving Christopher Scott. I know he will take the Youth Center in a positive direction.
If you ever want to stop by, I am across the street in the Behavioral Health Department and will be available for individual therapy sessions. No, individual therapy isn’t just for “crazy people” :). We can all benefit in having someone to talk to from time to time. For those of you whom I have worked with, I will continue to provide individual therapy. Please contact me to schedule an appointment, if necessary. I can be reached by telephone at (619) 234-2158 x128 or by email at melanie.cain@sdaihc.com. Please remember, I care about each and every one of you and will have many fond memories of my experiences with the Youth Center. I wish all of you the best. Remember to study hard and be “respectful” of one another, especially your parents :). You will be a grown-up before you know it and it’s important to develop a healthy sense of who you are. Use the Youth Center as a positive space for growing up. Take care of yourselves and make all your dreams come true!
Sincerely,
Melanie J. Cain, Ph.D.

What do YOU want to cook on November 10th?
Youth members have requested to pick the main course for an upcoming Wednesday Night Dinner. November 10th is that night! If you have any ideas, feel free to discuss them with your fellow members here at the Youth Center or on the comment section of this post. What we eat is up to all of you, as long as the meal follows these requests:
- balanced (includes healthy sources of protein, carbohydrates and fat)
- fresh vegetables are included
- the starch source is from a whole grain or root vegetable
- none of the foods require deep-frying
- prep/cook time is not more than 2 hours combined
After the decision has been made, let me (Daniel) know what's being made so we can purchase the supplies. Let us know by Friday, November 5th. We will, of course, supervise the kitchen, but all preparation, cooking and serving is all up to youth members!

Halloween Party Next Tuesday!
What are you doing next Tuesday? That's right. You're going to the Halloween Party. What's that? Yes, you're dressing up as a kooky character, and then you're entering the costume contest to win a variety of prizes. And then what? And then you'll play games, get spooked in the haunted house, eat wonderful food, and after a bit of free dancing, dominate the dance contest by showing off your newest moves. It was so much fun last year...remember these pictures? Oye, here's the information, just in case the specifics slipped your mind:

A little alternative health, a little dancin'...
We are blessed to have two special programs at the Youth Center these next two weeks: on Wednesday, we will have a free (FREE!) dance lesson from Culture Shock (we don't necessarily have to wear masks like the Jabbawockeez, though...). Next week, we have an extra gift and get to experience the dance lesson at the Culture Shock Dance Center (pending good behavior the week before, of course). Learn more about Culture Shock here. Last but not least, on Tuesday 10/19, the Alternative Health Network is coming to do a presentation. Learn more about the Alternative Health Network here.

"They say cut backs, we say fight back!"
Youth Center members, guardians and staff joined hundreds of other students, teachers, and community members in the National Day of Action to Defend Education and Public Services yesterday at Pantoja Park in Downtown. The day started with a rally, followed by a march, and ending with a festival back at Pantoja Park, where are very own member Bella presented a speech on how budget cuts are affecting her educational and after school programming. The event made local headlines, including a piece on CBS 8, which can be viewed here (you can see Youth Center members and staff at 0:46 and 2:06!). Pictures from the event are posted in our Photobucket album here in the 2010 Oct 7 Day of Action for Education album.

Join us next Thursday to defend Education!
On October 7th, we will participate in the Day of Action to Defend Education and Public Services. The Youth Center members have already voiced their concerns over the cuts to education locally in California; if you haven’t seen it yet, check out their YouTube video entitled “What is Happening to Our Education?” at http://www.youtube.com/SanDiegoAIHYC. We will join other concerned students, parents, grandparents, teachers, and community members for a rally, silent march, and festival at Pantoja Park in Downtown. Members, parents, families, friends: if you want to join us, we'll see you at the Youth Center or at Pantoja Park next Thursday!

2nd Annual Beach Party: Too Cool
We had fun times at the 2nd Annual Back to School Beach Party, held once again at Mission Beach! Due to a busy summer, we planned this year's party early on in the school year before everyone's schedules got too crazy.
Even though the water wasn't the warmest and the weather not incredibly steamy, this potluck-style gathering was a blast, so much so that we forgot to take pictures throughout the day! Click here to visit the 2010 Beach Party album on Photobucket; if you have any pictures you'd like to share, let us know!

Need community service hours? Be a Trash Talker!
Do you need to complete community service hours for school? In collaboration with the Operation Samahan Youth2Youth Program, members of the San Diego American Indian Health/Youth Center can get up to 8 hours of community service in one day!
On Saturday, October 2nd, as part of the 6th Annual FilAmFest (the picture at right is from last year's Festival), volunteer youth will serve as "Trash Talkers," educating and demonstrating to Festival attendees the importance of environmental health, sanitary practice and recycling. We have a limited number of applications, so if you're interested, send an email or stop by the Youth Center to sign up! This opportunity is for youth 13+.

Meet Sir Noms-A-Lot!
Our very own creative Youth Center member Daniella turned a gluten-free cookie mix box into the wonderful work of art in the video above. Sir Noms-A-Lot is the newest edition to our pantheon of wonderous Youth Center mascots, which include Rusty the "Diversity Bear" and his friend Mowgli, Dmitri the Owl, & Roberto, "el perro fantasmo." Alas, our first mascot Brody Skyler Hughes III, the armless dinosaur, is MIA (probably accidentally fell into the trashcan). A new Photobucket album, The Adventures of Sir Noms A Lot, has been added! Feel free to peruse...

Earthquake Preparedness Training
Today, Professor of Geology at Mesa College Don Barrie came to the Youth Center and provided members and staff with Earthquake Preparedness Training. The training included a demonstration of why houses/other structures built entirely out of stone are not "earthquake safe." In the picture at left, Eliseo and Spike swing a hammer at a piece of quartzite, showing how disruption to a larger stone structure would cause it to break up and crumble. Participants also learned about what to include in an earthquake kit, including (but limited to): food/water, hygiene items, medication, cash, sleeping bags, fire extinguisher, writing utensils, and tools. The training ended with an earthquake "simulation," where participants followed the three rules: Drop, Cover, and Hold On!

Sage gathering and martial arts field trip-ing
We have two exciting excursions coming up in the next few days. Tomorrow, Friday, August 6th, we're going on a mini-trip to gather sage. After gathering and drying, we will bundle the leaves to be gifted to participants of the Strength for the Journey retreat. Information on past Strength for the Journey retreats can be found here. Next Sunday, August 15th, members can sign up to join us on a field trip to a martial arts tournament in the South Bay. Seats in the van are limited, so if you want to ride with the Youth Center, please sign up. Feel free to meet us at the tournament, too! Information on the event can be found here.
**UPDATE**: We won't be gathering sage today, as the location we planned on gathering from is in the process of replenishing, and the other location is all the way in Julian! So we'll update you all for the rescheduled trip...

Culture Camp 2010 a HOT Success!
The San Diego American Indian Health Center's 7th Annual Culture Camp brought 25 youth participants and Youth Center staff all around San Diego County in three days of exploration, learning, and exhilarating activity. Despite record levels of heat, participants had enormous amounts of bonding time to create joyous, lasting memories.
On Day 1, we learned how to silk screen from Elvis Hauser, artist and owner of Skins Gear Native Owned Silk Screening. Participants learned how to silk screen bandanas, tote bags and pillow cases. While waiting to silk screen, participants custom painted their own hats and shoes. After silk screening and lunch at Chipotle, participants went to Solid Rock gym in Old Town for indoor rock climbing. Before the rock climbing lesson, participants discussed how certain outdoor rock structures are sacred to tribes and how it's important to respect these sites, such as De-ek Wadapush (Cave Rock) in Nevada for the Washoe, Tsé Bitʼaʼí (Shiprock) in New Mexico for the Navajo, and Mato Tipila (Devil's Tower) in Wyoming for the Lakota. Pictures from Day 1 can be found here.
On Day 2, we went "hiking" on Junipero Serra Trail at Mission Trails Regional Park (pictured above). Participants went off the Trail to view Kumeyaay grinding rocks and Mission Dam, built by the Kumeyaay in 1813 to bring water to Mission San Diego de Alcalá. The Visitors Center also treated participants to a free movie about the Park. After lunch at Souplantation, participants stayed in East County to go cosmic bowling at Parkway Bowl in El Cajon. Pictures from Day 2 can be found here.
Water defined Day 3, when we spent the whole day at Mission Bay. First, participants learned how to kayak, a word that comes from the Inuit qajaq (ᖃᔭᖅ in Inuktitut), meaning "hunter's boat." Participants took kayaking out of its original context of hunting in the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic, and instead leisurely meandered around the beautiful waters of Mission Bay. After two hours of kayaking, participants played in the Bay and ate Subway on the beach. We then learned how to make a drum from instructor Steve Garcia. Pictures from Day 3 can be found here.

Daniella's post to her favorite person...EVER!.
KELLEN!!! We are all going to miss you soooooo much!! I am going to especially miss that athleticism and competitiveness you bring to the Youth Center. I know we have had our differences of opinions from time to time, but in the end we both had a huge laugh and smile :). I especially want to thank you for all the filming opportunities & advice you have given me all the times when I really needed it. I never knew I would even be on YouTube... & you know what, you were the one that brought me out of my shyness & go out there and be in front of the camera and be a star :D. Also If we ever need a lawyer we know who to call ha ha. Anyways good luck with your new journey into life. We hope you enjoy it as much as you can. And you better visit, me especially!!! I'll be ready for more competitions!! :D LOVE YOU MANN!!!

Each day, participants engaged in exercises in the form of "boot camp"-style challenge trails and modified traditional games from the Chumash, Navajo, Kwakwaka'wakw, Haudenosaunee and other tribes. Click here for pictures from Day 2 of the camp (Day 1 pics will be posted soon!). When Health Circle becomes an impromptu dance party...
Our Health Circle topic today was "Understanding Physical Fitness: Finding Your Muscles." After learning about different muscle groups and exercises for them (those groups and corresponding exercises are listed on "Alex," whom Daniella is smiling with to the left), we decided to work out by having an impromptu dance party! We started with the hokey pokey, then moved on to the cha cha slide, achy breaky heart, electric slide, and other dances (including whatever Rachel, Gio, Alejandra and Michelle are doing in the pic at right). Check out more impromptu dance party pics in our photo album.

Healthy, tasty summer snacks.
Today, we made easy snacks that youth can make with minimal adult assistance. They are healthy and delicious alternatives that take almost no time and effort! Youth Counselor Erica Charley, Lissette, Daniella, Bella, and Youth Center Program Coordinator Dr. Cain pose in front of smoothies (with strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, and...spinach!), crudités (fancy word for "cut up vegetables"), cheese & crackers, and a chicken salad (similar to this recipe, except with regular yogurt and the addition of craisins and piñons). Try these and other ideas at home!

Lunchtime fun with fellow staff.
Staff from all departments of the San Diego American Indian Health Center--Medical, Dental, Fiscal, Administrative, Behavioral Health and the Youth Center--joined together for a deli lunch, accentuated by Prince and other 80s phenoms playing on the speakers in the background. We're hoping that these fun, total-Center staff get-togethers become a more regular thing!

May 2010: "Spring Time!/Getting Ready for Summer!"
Our theme for this fifth (5th) month of the year is "Spring Time!/Getting Ready for Summer!" This means--pending rain and that occasional cold spell--we'll be going outside for various activities more often to acclimate ourselves before the summer heat hits.
Among the spring-type things we'll be partaking in are our weekly boot camps and walks, as well as activities focusing on summer safety and healthy summer snacks you can prepare before outings to the beach, powwows, camping, etc. We will also be watching "warm weather" movies, including Avatar and Disney's Earth during our Friday movies & discussion. Check out the Monthly Calendar for more information.

New equipment for the warm weather!
Youth members Brandy and Aryanna model new tank tops before going out to Balboa Park for Boot Camp, and Dee demonstrates her softball skills with our freshly-acquired Louisville Slugger bat (only the best for our members) and MLB baseball helmet. If you're tired of being stuck inside all day after school, come in on Mondays and Fridays to try out our new stuff during Boot Camp!

Don't mess with Dr./Chef Cain
Today, our multitalented coordinator treated members to a wonderful spaghetti dinner, complete with a sweet tomato sauce with bell peppers, spinach and mushrooms, green salad and garlic bread. We cook dinner every Wednesday, and members are encouraged to help (check out our photo gallery for the hamburger-making extravaganza the week before!). During May, we plan to have breakfast foods, fettucini alfredo, and chicken teriyaki...all on different days, of course. Our last Wednesday night dinner for April will be pulled pork tacos.
If you have healthy meal ideas, leave a blog message, or place it in the Wolfpack Suggestions Box at the Youth Center!

We walk, we talk, we sit in giant trees...
Members and staff pause during a 1.5 hour walk from the Youth Center through Balboa Park. We usually take leisurely walks through Banker's Hill, Little Italy, Balboa Park or Hillcrest for an hour before Wednesday night dinners, but decided to go for a bit longer to enjoy the beautiful day outside. Join us for Walk y Talk(y) on Wednesdays!

Are YOU a Health Champion?
Youth Center members (specifically those between 13-19),
This Wednesday, we will begin a 2-month program called "Health Champions," which will be held during our usual Health Circle after dinner. The program will help us to better understand the basics of nutrition and fitness, as well as introduce us to careers within the health field (such as nurse, dietitian, nutritionist, dentist, doctor, personal trainer, etc.) and how we as community members can improve the areas we live in for healthier neighborhoods.
*Incentive alert*: Those youth members who fully participate (which means attending AND joining in on discussions, physical activities and games) in these special Health Circle sessions will be treated to a FREE field trip to Souplantation, and get a bunch of other goodies from the program. There is also the possibility that we will get a tour of the Souplantation corporate offices to get a first-hand glance into the company! Be sure to sign up this or next week for the program.
We hope to see you this and every Wednesday for this special program. We may even make the barbacoa tacos pictured here, courtesy of the Food.People.Want blog (click here for the recipe and original picture).

Spring Break
Youth Center members,
We have had a great week so far. We know not everyone is on SB but if you are we are having lots of fun at the YC. Stop by and find out for yourself. We are going to do some filming tomorrow, be the next star of our YC series, "What Would You Do?"

Relaying our stories, digitally.
From March 20-21, SDAIYC hosted a regional Digital Storytelling Train-the-Trainer workshop. The event was sponsored by the Healthy Native Communities Partnership and California Area IHS Promotion Disease Prevention. The workshop was designed to "guide [participants] through a process combining storytelling with modern-day technology and digital media. Digital storytelling is a low-cost, powerful and compelling way to promote social change and action by sharing first-narratives combined with digital media." Participants shared personal stories and combined voice, music, everyday sounds and images to relay personal histories. We hope to train youth members in the art of digital storytelling, which functions both as a creative and cathartic experience (well, at least for me).

Master artists in our midst...
Every Monday, Ms. Naomi Lake, LCSW, Behavioral Health Director at the San Diego American Indian Health Center, leads our youth in a Creative Arts group, where members can express themselves artistically using a variety of mediums, from markers and crayons to colored pencils and charcoal. Our own resident artists show off their masterpieces: Jesse created a chalk tiger that was then framed, and Brandy drew a picture for fellow member Rachel's birthday. Join us sometime soon to make your own wonders!

YC Vids
Hey check out our new videos. We have been working real hard and want your input. What scenarios would you like us to create?
March for Education
On March 4th 2010, staff and members of SDAIYC participated in the March for Education from El Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park to the downtown Governor's Office. Participation in the march had a two-fold meaning for our youth and staff: we exercised our bodies in the 2+ mile walk between the Center and the Governor's office, and exercised our support for education funding from elementary school through college. Health Center Intern Erin Hayes stated that "As a college student, it was inspiring to see other college students fight for the same cause." She held a sign along with Angel, stating "Education is everyone's right...I guess not mine." Staff and members came up with their own slogans for signs, including Daniella, who wore a clever and insightful sign along with fellow member Lissette saying "What?!...do you want me to be stoopid?" Youth Counselor Kellen Hernandez came up with the poignant slogan "Less $, more problems: don't blame the economy." We marched alongside students from various schools, including UCSD, SDSU, and City College. The picture is courtesy of the Justice UCSD Flickr gallery of the March 4th events.

Greetings from Dr. Cain :-)
Welcome to our blog posting!!!
We are happy to have you :-) Let me tell you a little bit about the San Diego American Indian Youth Center. We are the first urban, Indian youth center in San Diego County. This youth center is a place where youth between the ages of 10-22 can come hang out, meet new people, and learn new, exciting things about the Native American culture. We offer many groups, classes, and activities for youth members, which are designed to also promote interpersonal growth (and develop mad karaoke skills). If you would like to learn more about our program, please visit our website at www.sdaihc.com/youthcenter.aspx. Keep posted for new, upcoming events. Stay tuned for more info.

Our first post!
Hi! My name is Daniella Robles, and I am a youth member and the Cleaning Specialist here at the Youth Center! Thank you for visiting our blog! The picture is from the 2009 San Diego AIDS Walk, where many of the Youth Center members, staff and parents joined together to support HIV/AIDS research and funding. We hope this blog will serve as an outlet for our youth members into the world, and a way for others to learn about who we are and what we do. Feel free to leave comments, contact us and explore our blog!
