Aqua Camp 2012

Last week the youth center members got to participate in a 5 day water camp hosted by the Silver Strand Aquatic Center. This was a rare and unique opportunity because of the fact that our youth got to try out many different water sports such as kayaking, paddle boarding, Hawaiian rig canoeing, and surfing. During this time while they were learning these sports, the members also participated in team building excises that consisted of all the youth members working together to complete one main objective. The Aquatic Center also hosted a time of arts and crafts where the youth members used chalk colors to color and create a picture that explained their life stories. We would like to sincerely thank the Silver Strand Aquatic Center team for hosting our youth members and can not wait to come back again!

Hello everybody, we hope you are all having an awesome start of the summer. For those who don't know yet our youth center is the first Urban Native Team in the I.T.S. (Inter-Tribal Sports) league. This is a very special honor because now our very own youth members will be representing the urban native tribes in many different sports. As a part of I.T.S now, our current soft ball team were able to walk on the field of the Petco Park Stadium before a Padres game on May 18. You can see us here on the I.T.S newsletter,

As we all know graduations this year have ended, but the youth center would like to take a minute to recognize a special graduation that has happened for the native community. One of our very own miss Sheilah Dasher has graduated from San Marcos Sate University. Here she is with her fellow American Indian Graduates celebrating their great accomplishment.

And a picture with family and friends is always required on special occasions like this.
If you would like to learn more of the native american graduates here is a recent article written about them.

A memory not to be forgotten

The night Gabe, Joe, Daniel and I decided to have a 'staff bonding' dinner, we found ourselves indulging in sampler platters, sodas and burgers at Seau's Restaurant in Mission Valley after a long day at work. Winding down with some good laughs was just what we needed. Little did we know that we would have the pleasure to meet San Diego's own sports icon....Junior Seau. I can't remember a time seeing the boys so excited!

Hearing about the recent loss of the famous linebacker was a tragedy to sports fans, loyal Charger fans across the country and the community of San Diego, whom he made so very proud. Waking up Thursday morning and seeing his picture on the cover of the San Diego Union Tribune made the reports that much more real. It is an incredible loss.

Junior instantly graced us with the most polite mannerism not seen too often. He did not hesitate to pull a seat up at our table and talk to us about work and expressed interest in the work we did with the youth here at SDAIHYC. His optimism, firm handshakes, constant smile and words of advice along with his random jokes is a memory of Junior we are all blessed to have and will never forget.

On behalf of everyone here at the SDAIHYC, we want to send out our deepest condolences to Luisa Seau and the entire Seau family. Our prayers are with you always.

2012 College Conference Tour: UCSD Triton Day

The College Conference Tour continued with a small contingent visit to UCSD for Triton Day, during which admitted and prospective students tour the campus to explore the variety of organizations, academic majors, venues and buildings are available at the university.  We were lucky to attend the Native American student community welcome hosted by the Native American Student Alliance, which was also attended by Chancellor Fox and other UCSD faculty & staff.  Pictures from the day can be seen on our Photobucket album here.

Traditional and college experience storytelling

We were blessed last Friday to have both Cathleen and her son Brandon here for American Indian Storytelling!  Along with traditional stories, Brandon played his flutes and his mandolin, a change of pace from what we're used to.  He also shared his experiences and provided Q&A for members regarding life as a college student living away from home.

2012 College Conference Tour: UCLA

24 youth and staff members braved the roads of Los Angeles for the third installment of the College Conference Tour for the American Indian Student Association 13th Annual Youth Conference at UCLA.  Pics from the weekend can be seen in our Photobucket album here.

The trip started with a mostly traffic-free drive to Koreatown, where we stopped for lunch at Sanya, a Korean BBQ joint.  With bellies full, attendees drove to West Los Angeles for a tour and exploration of the Museum of Tolerance.  First, we explored the museum's exhibits on the history of (in)tolerance in the United States, the power of media, the pervasiveness of stereotype, and widespread child labor in the world.  Next, we were taken on a historical journey detailing the origins, atrocities and legacies of the Holocaust.  Each attendee was given a card to follow the journey of a Jewish child through the Holocaust.  One of the children on these cards, Devorah Kirszenbaum (known today as Dorothy Greenstein), survived the Nazis' crimes and shared her experiences of living in the Warsaw Ghetto and working as a mother's helper in Polish households during World War II.  After her stories and encouragement to the audience to "not hold grudges" and "study, study, study," youth members and staff got to speak one-on-one with Ms. Greenstein, which was arguably the highlight of our Museum of Tolerance visit.  We ended day 1 with a trip to Griffith Observatory, where we attended the last showing of "Centered in the Universe," a presentation in the planetarium dome of the Observatory.  After the 30-minute show, youth members explored the interactive exhibits of the observatory and ran around the declines and grassy spaces of the park.

Day 2 was for the conference at UCLA.  Youth members went on tours of the UCLA campus, participated in workshops on Native art, culture, and college admissions, and met other Native youth from around California.  The keynote speaker for the event was Robert Johnston from the Native Wellness Institute.  Mr. Johnston encouraged attendees to stick with their motivations and believe in themselves, inviting students onstage with him to introduce themselves and their goals in front of the audience.  After the conference, we headed to Hollywood Boulevard for one last stroll (and dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings) before driving back to San Diego.

Stories from Acoma Pueblo

Thank you, Kimberley, for introducing us to our wonderful guests this week!  Artist and storyteller Waya'aisiwa and his son Noah graced our Youth Center with traditional stories.  After the storytelling, he shared some of his artwork with us, combining traditional designs and imagery with inspiring quotes such as "Mountains are hard to climb when you don't believe," and "When you believe...your prayers do fly..."  To show gratitude to our guests, we gifted them with sage wrapped by our youth members.  Thank you again for the stories and art!

Dreamweaver Consortium at Active Living Research poster reception!

Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) staff from the Dreamweaver Consortium (Indian Health Council, Southern Indian Health Council, Sycuan Medical/Dental Center and San Diego American Indian Health Center) united together to create a poster for the Active Living Research (ALR) poster reception, with the poster's slot sponsored by the Association of American Indian Physicians (AAIP).  The poster included four quadrants with pictures, graphs and captions detailing the great research and work for Native children in San Diego County.  The poster (pictured here) had perfect placement, right at the entrance to the reception.  I would've taken a picture of the poster during the reception, but with the amount of traffic of onlookers and inquisitive researchers visiting the poster throughout the afternoon, it was nearly impossible!  Thanks to PEI staff from the Dreamweaver Consortium--Martina, Art, Leon, Charity, and SDAIHC staff--for coming out to the reception and for unifying together to make such an awesome poster...it was a grand success!

Red Cross teaches disaster preparedness

The Youth Center was graced with the presence of Ana Ortiz, AmeriCorps from the American Red Cross, for a disaster preparedness training (special thanks to Kimberley for hooking us up with the Red Cross, you rock!).  Youth members and staff learned about preparation for earthquakes, power outages, and other disasters that may occur here in the San Diego region.  After taking a quiz on what we learned, the members were given disaster preparedness kits, which included first aid kits, information, and a bowl (which Coral is modeling here as a hat...fashionable, eh?).  Thank you to Ana and the Red Cross for the information!  Special note: if you're in the top bunk of a bunk bed during an earthquake, stay in bed and put a pillow over your head until the shaking is over.  On the other hand, if you're on the bottom bunk, get off and find cover elsewhere, just in case the top bunk collapses.  If you didn't know, now you know.

Dancing fiends on Valentine's Day

Dare I embarrass myself? And my boss? Sure...This footage was captured at Club 7's Valentine's Day party, "I <3 my <3," on the Rincon Indian Reservation. Little did we know that we were going to be participating in the dance-off. Oh, the agony...

Teen Day at CCA!

We're going to start taking monthly field trips for Teen Day, and we began this month with a trip to Canyon Crest Academy to watch JP play basketball! Youth members made signs, wore CCA shirts given to us by JP's mom (THANKS!) and then enjoyed some frozen yogurt after the game. Many of our teens are so active in their high schools and their communities, and we hope to make our monthly field trips ways to highlight their achievements and involvement.

Red is for good luck in the Year of the Dragon

SDAIHYC was privy to the traditions of Chinese New Year last night, when we feasted on foods that are traditional around China and other parts of Asia during this season: noodles for long life, chicken for unity, tangerines for luck and spring rolls for wealth.  Red apples dotted the chicken curry, mirroring the red paper around the Youth Center with Chinese writing calling for a happy new year, announcing the "Year of the Dragon," and others with the character "double happiness," like the one on the food table at right.  After dinner, our winter intern Yue Helen Tang gave a presentation about traditional Chinese medicine.

Today, SDAIHYC is starting correspondence with the HiRez Youth Centre in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland! We are excited to learn more about their program, their youth, and the amazing work they do across the Atlantic. What's up to Ireland from San Diego!

Skateboarding and Gung Fu update

Skateboarding group is now back in full swing...with an actual skateboard instructor!  Yes, you can now skate AND have someone to teach you cool tricks...not just have Daniel saying "Don't fall!" The group is still on Thursdays from 430-6PM; try to be at the YC by 415PM so that you can get your board and safety equipment (the helmet is NOT optional, everything else is) before we venture to Balboa Park or one of the local skate parks, specifically those in Ocean Beach or National City.  Our new instructor, Rafael Uno, has been involved in the San Diego skate community for many years, and has already taught our group attendees some new things.  As for gung fu, Ciani's schedule has changed, so classes are looking to be on either Wednesdays or Thursdays.  Don't forget what you've learned...

Best of luck, Dr. Cain!

Our original Youth Center Coordinator, Licensed Psychologist, Health Circle facilitator, and all-around awesome lady Dr. Melanie Cain has left the building...and San Diego :(. Dr. Cain has taken a position in Los Angeles County serving the urban Native population up there, but we are forever grateful for the service she provided for all of us here in San Diego. On January 3rd, her last day here at San Diego American Indian Health, we here at the Youth Center provided a surprise potluck and go-away dinner for her. The youth, staff and parents alike thanked her for her kindness, generosity, humility, and the outstanding example she has provided for our youth and all of us. Best of luck, Dr. Cain; enjoy the traffic!!!

And a little video of the surprise:
